A cloud of shock and sadness has descended on Murany Village in Bomet East after two young schoolgirls allegedly fell victim to a disturbing act that has left families and residents grappling with pain and anger.
The two girls, aged 10 and 6, are currently receiving treatment at Longisa County Hospital following the incident that occurred near their village.
According to police, the children, who are pupils in Grade Three and Grade Two respectively, were on their way home when they were allegedly intercepted and lured into a nearby maize plantation.
The incident came to light when the girls returned home visibly distressed and in tears. Concerned family members sought to find out what had happened. It was during these conversations that the children reportedly disclosed the ordeal they had undergone.
For the families, the revelation was devastating.
Neighbours and members of the local community quickly rallied together, helping police track down a suspect linked to the incident. Their swift action led to the arrest of a 52-year-old man, identified by police as William Kipkirui Sitonik.
Confirming the incident, Bomet East Sub-County Police Commander Michael Singa said the suspect was arrested with the assistance of members of the public and is currently being held at Longisa Police Station pending his arraignment in court.
As the legal process begins, the focus has shifted to the recovery of the two young girls, whose lives have been abruptly disrupted by the traumatic experience.
The incident has reignited calls for greater vigilance in protecting children, with residents urging parents, teachers and community leaders to work together to ensure the safety of minors both at school and within their neighbourhoods.
For now, a village that is accustomed to the quiet rhythms of rural life is united in one hope—that the young girls will find healing, comfort and justice in the days ahead.
