What happens when a Pope dies?
The Holiness Pope Francis with former President Uhuru Kenyatta & Margret Kenyatta on 26th November 2015.
Upon the death of a Pope, the Catholic Church follows a series of traditional protocols to ensure a smooth transition.

1. Verification of Death

FIRST is the Camerlengo's Role: The Camerlengo is the chamberlain of the Holy Roman Church and is responsible for officially confirming the Pope's death. This involves a ceremonial act where the Camerlengo calls the Pope's baptismal name three times.
Historically, this included gently tapping the Pope's forehead with a silver hammer, though this practice has evolved over time due to modern scientific means of confirming death.

2. SECONDLY, follows the destruction of the Fisherman's Ring. The Pope's Fisherman's Ring, a symbol of his authority, is ceremonially destroyed by the Camerlengo in the presence of other cardinals. This act prevents its misuse and signifies the end of the deceased Pope's authority. Each Pope has his own ring.

3. THIRDLY, there is automatic suspension of the Papal Authority. This means that upon the Pope's death, all heads of Vatican departments cease their functions, except for those in charge of essential services. The Camerlengo oversees the administration of the Church during this period until a new Pope is elected.

4. After that, then there is the public Announcement and Mourning. The Dean of the College of Cardinals formally announces the Pope's death or another one designated. Then a time of mourning is declared,( usually a nine-day period) during which the faithful participate in various rites and prayers.

5. Then follows the funeral arrangements: The Pope's funeral typically occurs between the fourth and sixth day after his death. The service is usually held in St. Peter's Square is led by the Dean of the College of Cardinals. However, Pope Francis has since changed some of these practices and we shall soon be updated accordingly.

6. The Burial Site of most popes is in the Vatican Grottoes beneath St. Peter's Basilica, though some have chosen different resting places. Pope Francis has indicated that he would like to be buried at the Basilica of Mary Major.

7. THEN there will be preparation for the Conclave which convenes to elect a new Pope. This takes place within 15 to 20 days after the Pope's death, the College of cardinals gather in the Vatican. This gathering takes place in the Sistine Chapel, where the cardinals remain secluded until a successor is chosen.

These time-honored traditions ensure the continuity and stability of the Catholic Church during the transition between pontificates.

Eternal rest grant to your servant Pope Francis O Lord and let perpetual light shine upon him, may he rest in peace. Amen
