Controversy at The Nairobi Hospital has taken a new twist after a section of doctors distanced themselves from colleagues who asked William Ruto to intervene in the facility’s internal management.

The Medical Advisory Committee (MAC), which represents about 730 consultants, criticised five admitting doctors for bypassing established communication channels and presenting what it described as unverified claims to the hospital’s patron—moves officials say have escalated tensions within both clinical and administrative ranks.

MAC Chairperson Dr. Agnes Gachoki said the five doctors held an unauthorised meeting with the patron, sidestepping formal procedures that require communication to be channelled through the committee before reaching the Board of Management.

“We wish to clarify that these members of the admitting staff did not follow the laid-down structure of communication,” she said.

“They did not express any formal position of the hospital or the admitting staff, and no decision had been made to send representatives to the patron on this matter.”

Dr. Gachoki spoke alongside Board Chair Dr. Barcley Onyambu and CEO Felix Osano, who reaffirmed that the facility remains financially stable, operational, and committed to delivering quality patient care.

They dismissed claims of institutional collapse or the need for external intervention as unfounded.

“We are a going concern,” said Osano, noting that the hospital continues to receive supplies and process payments from insurers and government health schemes.

“While we owe some vendors, we are also owed billions by payers. The hospital remains fully operational and profitable.”

Dr. Onyambu and Dr. Gachoki said the hospital’s governance challenges date back to 2016, when infrastructure expansion projects and management disputes resulted in legacy debts and ongoing litigation.

“The hospital is stable, operational, and fully committed to quality patient care on the foundation of strong capabilities,” Onyambu said.

President Ruto has since pledged government support to safeguard the institution and ensure continuity of services, warning against attempts by individuals or groups to undermine its operations.

State House spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said the President’s intervention followed petitions from stakeholders concerned about governance disputes and legal challenges that could disrupt services.

Despite the heightened scrutiny, hospital leadership maintained that day-to-day operations and clinical services remain uninterrupted.

Staff have been urged to remain focused and resilient while upholding the hospital’s reputation.

The Nairobi Hospital said it is continuing to implement governance reforms, debt recovery strategies and transparency measures aimed at resolving historical challenges and securing long-term sustainability.
