As the political climate continues to intensify across the country, a growing call against tribal politics is gaining momentum. The Turkana community has joined the national conversation, firmly condemning tribalism as a divisive and harmful political ideology. Instead, they are calling for unity and peaceful coexistence among all Kenyans.

During a vibrant event organized by the Laikipia Turkana Youth Association (LATUYA) in Rumuruti town, LATUYA Chairman Josephat Ekiru, alongside other community leaders, emphasized the importance of cultural pride and national unity. The gathering was part of the Turkana Cultural Festival, a celebration of one of Kenya’s oldest and most resilient communities.

The event attracted hundreds of youths from Laikipia, Samburu, Baringo, Isiolo, and Turkana counties—young people who are passionate about preserving and promoting their cultural heritage. Festival highlights included colorful performances, traditional dances, and a showcase of the community’s rich customs and identity.

According to LATUYA, the festival’s primary goal was not only to celebrate Turkana culture but also to foster peaceful coexistence, encourage cultural exchange, and promote domestic tourism.

Community elders also used the platform to advocate for national harmony, urging Kenyans to reject tribal divisions and embrace peace and inclusivity.

In a show of appreciation, LATUYA leaders commended President William Ruto for nominating Erastus Ethekon as Chair of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), hailing it as a milestone for inclusivity and representation of marginalized communities.

Josephat Ekiru noted that the nomination reflects key constitutional values of equity and national cohesion. He further affirmed that Ethekon is a fitting candidate for the role, with the integrity and impartiality needed to lead the commission effectively.
